sigh...it's sad...now i'm worried about what's next..what disaster is gonna happen.

creepy
They are always happening, unfortunately. You can't let it get you down.
Can't remember - is there a way of detecting these before they happen?

Good question.

Well, an earthquake travels in waves. P Waves come first, S Waves come second. Some countries have come up with a gadget that is supposed to detect the P waves and send out an alarm. Here is an explanation from a japanese website: http://www.jma.go.jp/jma/en/Activities/how.pdf

Here is an article on the status of early warning systems: http://www.technologyreview.com/Infotech/20772/?a=f

The activity in this region was predicted a few years ago. I read that yesterday.
You can do something, if you want to help. I put a link to some reputable places you can donate...ten dollars, five pounds, is plenty; it all helps. If you have a birthday coming up, you can ask for donations to one of these instead of presents...I did that for the tsunami a couple of years ago. It was sweet that some of my friends put a receipt they printed out in a card and gave it to me. But you, being a person of great heart, are troubled by this, as am I. I know it sucks to see these things happen, but we must stay aware of what is going on in the world. It propels us to be better people, I think.
Really? Dang. Hey, you are up late.
In 2002, a study by Chen Xuezhong published in the Chinese seismology journal Recent Developments in World Seismology reported that starting 2003 there is a high probability of an M≥7 earthquake in Sichuan Province. "Sichuan is virtually certain to experience an earthquake measuring above 7 in the next few years"

In 2006, a study published in the Chinese Journal of Catastrophology (灾害学) reported that the Sichuan-Yunnan region may experience a M≥6.7 earthquake in 2008.

On April 26, nearly 80,000 m3 of water that once filled the Guanyin pond of Baiguo township of Enshi City, Hubei province sank underground with a rumbling sound. Changes in the underground water flow usually indicate changed seismic conditions.

On April 26-27, scientists at China's Geophysics Association made a prediction report of a possible M=6 to 7 earthquake in the vicinity of the converging point of Sichuan, Gansu and Qinghai provinces just south of Lanzhou. The report was sent to China's Earthquake Bureau on April 30. Geng Qingguo later added that the Ngawa area (阿坝地区) will likely experience an M≥7 earthquake on May 8±10 days. Geng also complained that other scientists tread down his findings and considered them as pseudoscience.

There is more info but that gives enough to know that this was seen to be coming. [can't sleep and so i tend to listen to radio and vox when that happens]
[this is good]
Over here, it is predicted that the Tennessee Valley (not too far from me) will experience a 7.9 quake within the next couple of years. The area experienced two very large quakes in the late 1800s (? can not remember exactly when) I was reading about that last night. (there are big faults)
[this is good]
All you can do is hope and pray for those poor folks. Unfortunately, it's out of everyone's hands.
Time to move then YES!
